Project Description
Pacy & Wheatley Acoustics were invited by T Lott Contractors, working in partnership with Graham Construction, to tender for the installation of a specialist acoustic wall and ceiling solution within a landmark redevelopment at Osney Power Station.
Originally supplying power to the city of Oxford since 1892, the historic site is now being transformed into a state-of-the-art business school. The facility will include 121 modern bedrooms to accommodate business school students, alongside high specification teaching and library spaces.
The Solution:
Following detailed discussions with T lott, Pacy & Wheatley successfully delivered and installed tailored acoustic solutions across multiple areas of the site, including the high-level library and teaching spaces, as well as the lobby and reception areas.
A total of 450m² of Styjl Fellert Old Boy in a concrete-effect finish was installed on the high-level library and teaching area walls. This specification was selected to address the anticipated high reverberation levels within the space once completed. The product, a Swedish system associated with the Fellert brand, comprised a 40mm glass wool absorption board finished with a hand-applied acoustic plaster to achieve a refined concrete aesthetic. As a Class A sound absorber, it effectively reduced reverberation, controlled ambient noise, and contributed to a calmer, more focused learning environment. The concrete-effect finish integrated seamlessly with the building's industrial character, creating a cohesive and visually striking result.
In the reception and lobby areas, 124m² of Ecophon Fade One Smooth was installed. The Ecophon Fade acoustic system provided Class A sound absorption combined with a clean, contemporary finish, making it particularly suitable for the lower ceiling heights and highly visible communal spaces. The system successfully reduced reverberation and overall noise levels, helping to create a more comfortable and welcoming environment for staff and visitors alike.
The use of two complementary acoustic products enabled the project team to precisely tailor performance and aesthetics to each area of the building. This approach ensured optimal acoustic control throughout the site while maintaining a cohesive architectural finish.
