Project Description
Pacy and Wheatley Acoustics were invited by GEN to tender for the installation of a seamless acoustic plaster ceiling as part of the redevelopment and refurbishment of New Zealand House in St James, London.
The Grade II listed building, designed and constructed in the 1950s and officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1963, is an important landmark within London's architectural heritage. The redevelopment incorporates a variety of interior environments, including office floors, meeting rooms, circulation areas and hospitality spaces. Given the building's listed status, the project required a carefully considered approach, with design and construction decisions subject to a thorough heritage approval process. The challenge was to introduce modern acoustic performance while respecting the building's original architectural character.
The Solution
Following detailed discussions between GEN, Pacy and Wheatley Acoustics, over 300m² of Fade One Acoustic Plaster was successfully installed across 12 levels of this Grade II listed building. The installation took place across offices, meeting rooms and hospitality spaces.
Fade One was selected for its exceptional acoustic performance, providing high levels of sound absorption in areas where large groups of people regularly congregate, including busy lift lobbies, circulation areas and meeting rooms. Its ability to minimise unwanted background noise and reduce reverberation makes it an ideal solution for a mixed-use environment, helping to improve speech clarity, enhance privacy and create a more comfortable experience for occupants.
The project demonstrates a considered balance between the preservation of the building's heritage and the delivery of modern acoustic performance. Fade One's seamless, refined finish enhances the acoustic environment while complementing the architectural character of the Grade II listed building. This ensures the integrity of the original space is respected while supporting the client's vision for a contemporary, stylish interior.
